Tom Guild
President/Chief Engineer

Tom Guild has spent almost his entire life working and playing with sound. Although his parents report that he didn't speak his first word until the age of 3, he's made up for lost time since then. His first tape recorder was a cheap Japanese model his father brought home from a business trip to New York when Tom was about 10.

It featured a crappy little microphone, tiny 3-inch reels, and a voracious appetite for D cells. Even so, it was wonderful, and Tom recorded everything he could find with his new tape recorder. This included his collection of Herb Alpert records, the family cat, and his mother telling him to turn that thing off.

Tom graduated to more sophisticated tape recorders as time went on, setting up a radio station/recording studio in his basement, built from random Heathkit parts and finishing nails. While in high school, Tom discovered that his voice had changed, and in his senior year, he nabbed a job at WDBS, the Duke University campus radio station. Apparently nobody noticed that Tom was not actually a student at Duke, even though he was on the air three afternoons a week. The next year he rectified that problem, enrolling at Duke. As a student…Tom was an excellent DJ. His radio career continued for almost 30 years, at WQDR, WRDU, WTRG and a few others. During that time, Tom honed his copywriting and production skills, winning Addys and other honors along the way.

After a brief post-broadcasting detour into the world of IT and computer networking, Tom joined SoundTrax as engineer and producer in early 2002. His relationship with Don, Perry, et. al. goes much farther back, however, since Tom has also been a voice talent at Sound Trax since the mid-80s. This gives him a unique perspective when running v/o sessions, having been on both sides of the studio glass.

Tom loves working with sound design, whether created wholly in the studio or combined with elements from SoundTrax's vast library of recorded sounds. Music editing is another favorite, and his voice editing skills are second to none. Thanks to the amazing AudioFile SC system at Sound Trax, he can slice and dice right down to the syllable without anyone noticing (except himself).

Credits include 5.1 surround mixing for 2 recent films now showing at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences: "Beneath The Blue" and "Lessons From The Journey", as well as working on numerous award-winning broadcast campaigns for local and regional clients.

Tom's voice continues to be heard as well in countless broadcast, video and web productions...including a short film about the final release in the world-famous Lemony Snicket book series. It was scary enough that the publisher included it as part of the official website!

He's also created live Sound Design for local theater companies including Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern, and has occasionally appeared on stage as an actor himself.

Tom enjoys photography, cooking, travel, and fixing his family's ever-malfunctioning collection of computers. His family enjoys handing him a beer and watching him fall asleep.
