Don Mercz

At anchor - Sea of Abaco, Bahamas

Don has been a sailor for about 20 years; he’s been involved with sound and electronics for over 40. Prior to entering his teen years, Don had a General Class Amateur Radio license and had constructed many. kit projects and radio transmitters.

With adolescence, (and the Ed Sullivan Show) came the realization that the Beatles were probably much more popular with the girls than Marconi had ever dreamed of being - so he built an amplifier, put down the soldering iron and picked up a guitar.

Since that time, Don has been a professional Musician a Recording Engineer for WUNC – FM and a freelance Production Mixer/Sound Engineer.

Don has done a lot of ENG mixing; some of his clients include CBS (Early Show), ABC (Good Morning America), 60 Minutes and Dr. Phil. He has recorded sound for numerous film projects including ESPN (Commercial – 16 mm), Southpeak Interactive (Games - 35 mm), Complete Pictures (N.C. Gov. Mike Easley Campaign Spots – 16 mm) and sas (Commercials - 35 mm).

Live concert recordings include performances by the Chieftains, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Branford Marsallis and the Tokyo String Quartet; sound reinforcement gigs include Festival for the Eno, Raleigh’s First Night celebration and Arts in the Meadow (Chapel Hill).

Don has extensive experience engineering live broadcasts, such as University of N.C. basketball and football games (Tarheel Sports Network), radio broadcasts of performances by Carol Sloane and the Red Clay Ramblers and webcasts and teleconferences for Galxo Smith Kline and sas. Don is currently the Audio Director for Medical Crossfire - a Continuing Medical Education program that travels to most major U.S. cities. This production is a 4 camera shoot staged before a live audience (medical convention), with multi-track audio recording, 2 track safety record, sound reinforcement and a reference mix for the production truck. It’s enough to keep a sound mixer busy, even when he can get the guys in the truck to roll a transcription cassette!

Don lives south of Chapel Hill, N.C. in rural Chatham Co. He spends as much time as possible with his lovely girlfriend Ann, and still manages to fit some sailing in – weather permitting.
